Fairview's defense made sure Friday night belonged to the Yellow Jackets.

Facing a larger Williamson County opponent and looking to avenge last season's loss, Fairview forced five turnovers and held off a late Centennial rally for a 21-14 home victory.

The win moved the Yellow Jackets to 2-0 and gave Fairview its first victory over Centennial in just the second meeting between the two programs.

While Centennial found success moving the ball at different points throughout the night, the Cougars repeatedly came away empty because of Fairview's opportunistic defense. The Yellow Jackets intercepted four passes and recovered a fumble, turning several Centennial scoring threats into missed opportunities.

The final takeaway was the biggest.

Centennial had pulled within seven points in the fourth quarter and was driving for a possible tying score in the final seconds. With the Cougars threatening deep in Fairview territory, Trace McCoy stepped in front of a pass down the left side and secured the game-clinching interception.

It was a fitting ending for a Fairview defense that spent much of the night answering whenever Centennial gained momentum.

Fairview had built a 21-0 lead before the Cougars mounted their fourth-quarter comeback.

The Yellow Jackets struck almost immediately after the opening kickoff. Facing a long third-down situation on the first possession of the night, quarterback Isaac Burgos connected with sophomore Julius Carter on a short pass to the left.

Carter turned the completion into a 68-yard touchdown, racing away from the Centennial defense and putting Fairview ahead less than two minutes into the game.

The early score energized the home side, but Centennial quickly showed it would be able to move the football.

Quarterback Paxton Pierce completed his first eight passes and helped guide the Cougars deep into Fairview territory before the Yellow Jacket defense stopped the drive on downs.

That became a theme.

Centennial reached Fairview territory several times in the first half, but interceptions repeatedly ended promising possessions.

Taylor Kelley recorded Fairview's first interception after Centennial had moved the ball into position to threaten. Cole Neal later added another takeaway when pressure forced sophomore quarterback Rhys Barnett into a hurried fourth-down throw.

Fairview turned that defensive stop into another touchdown.

The Yellow Jackets covered 68 yards in eight plays, with Kentrell Harrison finishing the drive on a 6-yard scoring run to make it 14-0.

Another interception later in the half helped Fairview preserve the two-score advantage heading into the break.

The Yellow Jackets then produced one of the most important stretches of the game after halftime.

Centennial opened the second half by moving the ball to the Fairview 41, but the Jackets recovered a fumble for their fourth forced turnover.

Fairview followed with a drive that reflected the type of football the Jackets wanted to play all night.

The offense ran 14 plays, covered 65 yards and kept possession for roughly seven and a half minutes. Bryson Harrison capped the march with a 2-yard touchdown run, extending Fairview's lead to 21-0.

That drive helped Fairview finish the night with a substantial edge in possession time. The Yellow Jackets controlled the ball for 28:47 compared with 19:13 for Centennial.

The Cougars finally found life in the fourth quarter.

After forcing Fairview to punt from deep in its own territory, Centennial took advantage of favorable field position. Pierce completed four passes on the ensuing drive, including a 4-yard touchdown connection with Felix Heuer that cut the lead to 21-7.

Less than a minute later, Centennial senior Aiden Araujo intercepted Burgos and gave the Cougars another short field.

Centennial scored again quickly, this time on a 5-yard run by Heuer, making it 21-14 and turning what had looked like a comfortable Fairview lead into a tense finish.

The Yellow Jackets nearly put the game away on their next possession when Burgos connected on a 51-yard pass play on third down. Centennial's defense eventually forced a turnover on downs, however, giving the Cougars one final opportunity with 2:41 remaining.

Pierce kept the drive alive on fourth-and-15 with a 21-yard completion to Landyn Branch. Additional completions to Heuer, Brody Haddox and Branch moved Centennial down the field and put the Cougars in position to threaten the end zone.

That was when McCoy ended it.

His interception gave Fairview its fourth pick of the night and sealed one of the Jackets' biggest early-season wins.

Burgos finished 12-of-18 passing for 193 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Carter accounted for Fairview's biggest offensive play and also led the Jackets on the ground, rushing for 50 yards on 15 carries while catching two passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Kentrell Harrison added 30 rushing yards and a score, while Bryson Harrison accounted for Fairview's other rushing touchdown.

Pierce finished 22-of-33 for 217 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions for Centennial. Landyn Branch led the Cougars with six receptions for 82 yards, while Heuer scored both Centennial touchdowns.

For Fairview, though, the story of the night was the defense.

Five takeaways allowed the Yellow Jackets to withstand Centennial's 234 passing yards and a determined fourth-quarter comeback.

A year after falling by more than 20 points in the first meeting between the programs, Fairview responded on its home field and evened the short series.

The Yellow Jackets will take their 2-0 record on the road next week when they travel to face longtime rival Hickman County, which enters the game at 1-1 following a 22-8 loss to Waverly.

Centennial, now 0-2, returns home to face Gallatin.
