Fairview Boulevard's long-running sidewalk and safety project is now under construction, bringing new pedestrian connections and intersection work to one of Fairview's busiest corridors.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation project covers State Route 100 from the Fairview Community Center area to Bowie Lake Road. The work includes curb and gutter, storm drainage, and 5-foot sidewalks, with different sidewalk coverage depending on the section of the corridor.

From Fairview Community Center to King Road, TDOT plans sidewalk on the westbound side of SR 100. From King Road to Cumberland Drive and Crow Cut Road, sidewalks are planned on both sides. From Cumberland Drive and Crow Cut Road to Bowie Lake Road, sidewalk work continues on the westbound side.

The most visible intersection change is planned at Cumberland Drive and Crow Cut Road, near Fairview's school campuses. TDOT says the project includes dedicated left-turn lanes, a new traffic signal, and school-zone flashing signage at that intersection.

For residents, the practical effect is twofold: safer pedestrian movement along a corridor with gaps in sidewalk coverage, and better traffic control where school, recreation, and commercial traffic all meet SR 100.

The construction schedule matters because SR 100 is an everyday route for school traffic and cross-town travel. TDOT says traffic control will happen in two phases, shifting traffic on one side of SR 100 at a time so sidewalk construction can move forward.

During the school year, scheduled construction impacts are expected to be intermittent lane closures on SR 100 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. TDOT says no night work is permitted. When school is not in session in June and July, work is permitted from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. TDOT also says Cumberland Drive is not scheduled for full closures while school is in session.

The project is currently listed as under construction. Construction began in September 2025, and TDOT lists the estimated completion as fall 2026, subject to change. Funding is federal and state.

The project has been in motion for years. TDOT lists the Cumberland Drive intersection project as initiated in June 2018, with right-of-way acquisition authorized in September 2023 and construction let in May 2025. The sidewalk segment from the Fairview Community Center to Bowie Lake Road was initiated in January 2018, with right-of-way acquisition authorized in March 2019 and construction let in May 2025.

TDOT says no major environmental impacts are associated with the work. Erosion prevention and sediment-control practices are planned during construction, and two streams and a wetland within the project limits are to be preserved.

Residents watching the project should expect weekly traffic impacts through TDOT's Middle Tennessee Lane Closure reports. The main thing to know now is that the work is not just cosmetic. It is intended to connect sidewalk gaps, manage school-area turning movements, and make a central Fairview corridor safer for people walking and driving.
